As Catedrais beach - by Gurich Ramos on Google
Description
Praia de Augas Santas or Praia das Catedrais (Beach of the Cathedrals) is located along the Cantabrian sea, in Galicia. It owes its name to the rock formations forming some arches (reminiscent of flying buttresses) and caves along the spectacular cliffs that reach 30m in height. There are a couple of viewpoints and the beaches are suitable for bathing or a walk depending on the tide. There is a staircase going down to the beach, a visitor centre, and car park.
Access & Transport
The beach is in the village of Devesa, in the north of Lugo Province, The Esteiro train station is 1.3km away - it is on the Ferrol to Oviedo line which is pretty slow paced. By car, Oviedo is 140km to the East, A Coruña the same distance to the west and Lugo is 85km to the southwest.
Instructions & Recommendations
*** Important notice: for visits between 01 July and 30 Sept. it is necessary to make a booking (https://ascatedrais.xunta.es) to access the beach. It is free and can be made up to 30 days in advance ***
Environmental & Social
Green attraction without excessive infrastructure. Tourism brings economic activity to the surrounding villages
Conclusion
As Catedrais is certainly impressive and warrants a stop if you are in northern Galicia but, in our opinion, there are also other worthy stretches of coastline to check out so it probably doesn't warrant a long drive. Recommended, but not in the summer.
Key positive
Great walk among the "cathedrals" at low tide
Key negative
Very busy in high season
Suitability
Visitors with reduced mobility can enjoy the views from the top but won't be able to get down to the beach
