Description
Cape Finisterre is one of the western-most points of the Iberian Peninsula and also marks the end of the Camino de Santiago (Way of St James). The active lighthouse is 143m above sea level, has an octogonal granite tower, and its lantern has a range of over 40km that is supplemented by a siren in foggy weather. Expect sweeping ocean views and some wind.
Access & Transport
The lighthouse is reached through a small road from the village of Fisterra. There are a couple of parking lots about 500m and 1km away or you can walk the 3km (one way) from the village. The peninsula is 85km west of Santiago de Compostela.
Instructions & Recommendations
There is a small museum inside the lighthouse but it is unclear what the opening times are.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral and tourism brings some revenues to the surrounding villages
Conclusion
Outdoor enthusiasts and sunset lovers will truly enjoy the views from the cape. In addition, although the end of the world feel might be slightly exaggerated, it does feel like it is also the beginning of something vast. Good place to philosophize.
