Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

Al Sha-i' Street, Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi

Description

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is the world's largest falcon hospital, treating over 10,000 falcons a year. Facilities include veterinary / surgical services, an ophthalmologist unit, and a breeding center. Tours are organised one or twice a day (depending on the month of the year), except Saturdays. They include a visit of the falconry museum, free flight aviary, examination room, explanation of the concept of falcon registration, and a picture with a falcon resting on each guest arm. A lunch add-on option is also available.

Access & Transport

The ADFH is located near the Abu Dhabi International Airport, on the right side along the Abu Dhabi - Sweihan (E20) road 3 km after the Sweihan Bridge. Detailed instructions are provided here: https://www.falconhospital.com/contact-us/location-map There is no public transport available in the area.

Instructions & Recommendations

The hospital strongly suggests that individual bookings be made with 2 days advanced notice. The guided tours are held in English language but can also be held in Arabic, French and German with advanced notice. Other languages such as Spanish or Chinese can be arranged at an additional charge.

Meta review

Based on online reviews, the tour is very informative and the staff welcoming. It is an excellent option for those who enjoy responsible animal tourism, the perfect opportunity to learn about falconry and see the birds up close. The main drawback is the location that can be hard to find.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. In terms of animal welfare, the hospital helps treat thousands of falcons every year but we see little impact from the tour one way or another

Conclusion

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is a genuine functioning hospital / veterinary facility, not just a show for tourists. Overall, the tour appears to be run responsibly with good ethics - which is not a statement about falconry and the import of captured falcons into the Middle East. We think the price is a little steep so we would only recommend it to those very keen on animals or who want to learn more about this regional hobby.
