Heritage Village, Abu Dhabi

Al 'Alam Street, Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi

Description

The Abu Dhabi Heritage Village is a sort of open-air museum seeking to capture the essence of the UAE lifestyle before the era of hydrocarbon extraction. There is a fort with traditional wind tower, a traditional barasti house, irrigation channels (falaj), camels, goats, a souq and some craftsmen (glass blower, tanner, swordsmiths, etc.).

Access & Transport

The Heritage Village is on Al'Alam Street, on the Marina breakwater, facing the Corniche. It is possible to reach by public transport as several bus services (5, 7, 9, 11, 22, 26, 34, 63, 65, 67, 69, 71) stop at Marina Mall, a 10-15ins walk away.

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity can easily be combined with a lunch at the Marina Mall and some time at the Corniche Beach.

Meta review

The "museum" is featured in guidebooks and travel magazines. Most visitors are pleasantly surprised and mostly enjoy seeing and interacting traditional craftsmen but the general sense is that whilst is "nice", it is not a must see, especially for those short on time in the city.

Environmental & Social

This activity has a low carbon footprint. Socially marginally positive as it helps preserve some of the emirate's cultural and artisanal heritage

Conclusion

The Heritage Village obviously feels artificial, but not overly so, and tourists with a curious and open mind will take the opportunity to visualize what life at the edge of (or surrounded by) the desert feels like and how far the country has come since the oil extraction began. With no entrance fee, there is little downside except for those with a tight schedule in the city, in which case this should not be on the priority list.

Key positive

Good interaction with craftsmen is possible

No entrance fees

Key negative

Feels a little like a staged show

Suitability

Suitable for all ages and people with mobility issues
