Falcon & Saluki Show at Qasr Al Sarab Resort

Qasr Al Sarab Road, Jereirah, Abu Dhabi

Description

The Falcon & Saluki show reviewed here is organised by and held around the Anantara's Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort. It is a demonstration of centuries' old hunting technique combining falcons swooping on (fake) preys and the saluki desert hunting dogs racing for bait. The show is held twice daily but the morning one would require customers to stay at the resort overnight whereas the afternoon caters to both the hotel guests and outside customers.

Access & Transport

The Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort is located in the Liwa Desert, close to the border with Saudi Arabia, 200km south of the city of Abu Dhabi.

Instructions & Recommendations

The show is only available from October to April. Children below 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult

Meta review

The hotel organising the show is very famous in the Abu Dhabi emirate as a luxury getaway destination so that this activity is mostly covered by high-end travel magazines and a few travel blogs. Reviews are unsurprisingly positive and either come from resort guests or are commercially oriented (and therefore have a tendency to be biased).

Environmental & Social

This activity involves a large carbon footprint related to transport for those making the trip from Abu Dhabi purposely. We deem this activity to be socially neutral

Conclusion

The show allows guests to witness Saluki hunting and falconry as well as learn more about these traditional desert practices. In that sense it is a unique experience we would highly recommend, but travellers will need to weigh that against the long drive and steep total cost (including transport) of the activity. As such, it comes down to the usual variables beyond personal interests and quality: budget and time scarcity. If none of them is an issue then go for it and add at least one night at the resort if possible; if not, then there are better ways to allocate your time and money in the UAE.

Key positive

One of the few opportunities for visitors to the UAE to witness falcons and salukis in action

Key negative

Expensive

Time consuming to get there and back (comment n/a for resort guests)

Suitability

Suitable for children but those under 8yrs old may not really appreciate the show. It is unclear if the activity is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility.
