Al Ain Zoo - by Larisa Lifshits on Google
Description
Al Ain Zoo is home to over 4,000 animals including a large number of ungulates such as Arabian antelopes, oryx and gazelles, felines such as the Arabian leopard and lions, rhinos and other exotic species. Several "experiences" are also on offer as well as a safari guided drive in the foothills of the Jebel Hafit range.
Access & Transport
The zoo is located in just south Al Ain city, off Nhayyan Al Awwal St It is a 1h30' and 1h15' drive from the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai respectively
Instructions & Recommendations
Nearby attractions include Al Jahili Fort and the Al Ain Oasis
Environmental & Social
The zoo is involved in endangered species breeding programs (such as the Arabian Oryx and the Hirola antelope): https://www.alainzoo.ae/conservation/our-zoo-and-wildlife-conservation. No other environmental information available other than some efforts to reduce the consumption of plastic water containers (from a high baseline)
Conclusion
The zoo makes for a good family half-day excursion but, considering Al Ain's location, we think it is only worth the journey from other UAE locations when combined with other attractions in the area. There are some commandable conservation efforts, but we feel more could be done in terms of enclosures (too exposed to the sun) and that there is too much commercial focus
Key positive
Family friendly option
Wide range of regional ungulate species
Key negative
Could do with more sheltered space and without animals from cold / polar regions
Long drive away from the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai
Suitability
Suitable for all ages and accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
