Description
Albacete is the capital of the namesake province, in the southeast of Castile-La Mancha, bordering the Valencian Community. The origins of the city go back to the Al-Andalus period when the Muslims ruled most of the Iberian Peninsula. It was reconquered in 1240 by Ferdinand III who gave it to Alarcón and shortly afterwards it was transferred to Chinchilla de Montearagón. The city grew on the basis of its agricultural land and its knives manufacturing industry (today it is better known for its aviation industry). Albacete was the main headquarters of the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. Landmarks and architectural highlights include the Iron Gate, the Gothic Cathedral of San Juan, the Plaza de Toros (bullring), the Lodares Passage (a modernist covered gallery), and the Albacete Museum.
Access & Transport
The city can be reached by AVE (high speed train) from Madrid in 1h40m. By car from Madrid, Albacete is 260km in a south-eastern direction along the A-4/AP-36/A-31. It is also 160km to the south of Cuenca and 170km to the southwest of Valencia.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest including a visit to the knife museum (Museo de la Cuchillería de Albacete) during your stay. The town of Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón is also worth checking out and is only 15km to the southeast.
Environmental & Social
The main activities in the city have a low carbon footprint. Tourism helps preserve some of the city's architectural and cultural heritage
Conclusion
The city of Albacete has a few interesting touristic sights deserving a half to full day visit as part of a regional in-depth/slow travel itinerary. Make sure to check out the Cathedral and the Museo de la Cuchillería when you are there.
