Description
Alcalá del Júcar is a village in the province of Albacete, on the western side of Castile-La Mancha. Its name is probably a combination of the Arabic term for castle and the river Júcar that flows through the village. Like most of the province, it was reconquered from the Moors in 1211-13. The castle was built in the 12th century under the Almohades. Other sights include the irregularly shaped Plaza de toros (bullring), the Roman bridge, and the view from the Mirador del Júcar.
Access & Transport
The village is 53km northeast of Albacete on the CM-332/CM-3254 and 130km southwest of Valencia on the A-3/A-32/CM-3201
Instructions & Recommendations
The castle opening hours are 11h-14h + 17h-20h from May to Sept. and 11h-14h + 15h-18h from Oct. to April.
Environmental & Social
The main activities in the village have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy
Conclusion
Alcalá del Júcar is a visual rather than a cultural experience; the attraction there is the topography / village setting rather than the castle or churches. Considering its off-the-beaten-track location we would therefore recommend it to those looking to explore the eastern Castile-La Mancha region (or crossing over from the western part of the Valencian community).
