Calares del Mundo y de la Sima NP

CM-3204, Riópar, Castilla-La Mancha

Description

The natural park of Calares del Mundo y de la Sima is situated in the Alcaraz y Segura mountain range, in the southwest of the province of Albacete (Castile-La Mancha). It extends over nearly 191 sq. km with a great variety of landscapes and vegetation: there are over 1300 species of flora of which 35 are endemic. The three rivers Mundo, Segura and Tus have sculpted the karst landscape; there are numerous waterfalls, sinkholes and limestone escarpments. A listing of various routes can be found here: https://areasprotegidas.castillalamancha.es/rap/espacios-naturales-protegidos/enp-parque-natural/408/visita-y-disfruta

Access & Transport

Riopar (on the CM-412) is the best access point from the northern side and Yeste (on the CM-3206) from the southern side. They are both about 135km to the southwest of Albacete, close to the borer with Andalucia.

Instructions & Recommendations

This is the real outdoors with potentially some mid-altitude involved so make sure you wear proper shoes (closed with some grip), carry some water and sun protection as well as some snacks - and leave nothing behind.

Meta review

Except for the busy / touristy beginner friendly short trail to the Nacimiento del Río Mundo (origin of the Mundo River) that gets positive reviews, we could not find sufficient reviews to comment on the other routes.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity. Socially marginally positive as it brings some revenues to the villages in the surrounding valleys

Conclusion

This natural park deserves to be more popular with outdoor enthusiasts; its main drawback is its remote location with no large city within less than 1h45 drive. If you happen to be in the Albacete Province or Murcia and looking for some hiking ideas or wild landscapes, then this should be near the top of your list. Make sure you do a little research regarding the trail that interest you and how to get there

Key positive

Some spectacular waterfalls and a varied karst landscape

Key negative

Time consuming to get to

Suitability

Age-suitability depends on the trail being taken. The trails are not accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
