Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón Castle - by Juan Jose on Google
Description
Chinchilla de Montearagón is a town close to Albacete with a history going back to the Middle Ages. Like the rest of the area, it was under Arab rule until the 13th century, 1242 in this case, after which it was under the dominion of the Marquis of Villena. From the 15th century onward (under the Catholic Kings), the town slowly lost in importance to its neighbour Albacete. The main monuments are the Castle of Chinchilla with its impressive moat (10m wide and 6m deep), the La Mancha Square, the Cuevas del Agujero, and the XIV century church of Santa María del Salvador.
Access & Transport
The town is a straight 16km to the southeast of Albacete on the A-31 (exit 88).
Instructions & Recommendations
Note that the castle is currently undergoing some renovations so only the exterior can be visited. We suggest combining a trip there to a discovery of the city of Albacete and maybe its knife museum.
Environmental & Social
The main activities in the town have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy
Conclusion
The town of Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón is endowed with a few monuments and makes for an easy excursion out of Albacete or as part of a road trip in the namesake province. However, in our opinion, it doesn't have enough wow factor or unique characteristics to warrant a dedicated trip from a base outside of southern Castile-La Mancha.
Key positive
Imposing castle with well-preserved defensive structure
Key negative
A little time consuming to get to (except from Albacete)
Not Tier-A touristic highlight
