Description
Benidorm is a large seaside resort in the province of Alicante. Starting in the 1950's, as its fishing industry declined, it promoted itself as a tourist destination and is considered to be one of the birthplaces of package tourism. Nowadays, over 5m sun-seeking tourists descend on the city every year, mostly from the UK and Northern Europe. The city is known its skyscrapers (incl. Intempo, the 5th highest building in the country), its nightlife and its beaches (the main ones are Levante, Poniente and Mal Pas - all have a blue flag rating). The Balcón del Mediterráneo is the most popular observation deck.
Access & Transport
The Alicante to Benidorm tram takes 65mins to cover the 45km separating both cities. Valencia is 140km to the north / 2h drive on the AP-7. There are several bus lines within the city.
Instructions & Recommendations
The beach and the sun can be strong here so don't forget the usual protective equipment (hat/cap, "green" sunblock, sunglasses, slippers) and some water.
Environmental & Social
Major environmental impact from residential development and over-commercialization is also having a negative impact on the social fabric and behaviour.
Conclusion
Those looking to stay in one location with everything at hand will enjoy the city, and unsurprisingly there are many who return year after year or even 'winter' there. However, those looking for cultural activities can skip and outdoor lovers will be horrified by the skyline and should avoid the town.
