Palmeral de Elche - Huerto del Cura

Passeig de l'Estació, Elx, Comunidad Valenciana

Description

The Palmeral of Elche is Europe's largest palm grove with over 200,000 trees. Planting started during the Roman period, but it is during the Caliphate of Córdoba (10tth century) and later under Al-Andalus rulers that the canal system was developed. The Palmeral includes a National Artistic Garden called Huerto del Cura, the Palm Grove Museum, the Route of El Palmeral, and a Municipal Park. Besides palm trees, the Huerto del Cura also includes a citrus orchard, olive trees, a rock and cactus garden, ponds, and the famous "Imperial Palm" that has 7 shoots and is about 180yrs old.

Access & Transport

The park / grove is in the middle of Elche, next to the 'El Parc' train station. The town of Elche is 25km southwest of Alicante and just under 30mins by train (C1).

Instructions & Recommendations

If you have time, the Palmeral Museum has some useful info and only costs 1€.

Meta review

Given the UNESCO WHS status of the Palmeral, the site is systematically recommended as one of Alicante Province key attractions. Online reviewers confirm that the gardens are indeed really enjoyable and the Huerto del Cura is the centrepiece with everything neatly maintained and a variety of species besides the palm trees.

Environmental & Social

Green activity. Helps preserve the town's historical and agricultural heritages.

Conclusion

The Palmeral and Huerto del Cura combine visual and historical aspects for an experience that is quite unique to this part of the country. Worth a detour and we recommend going either early morning or in the evening to avoid the crowds and the heat of the day (even though most paths are shaded)
