Costa da Caparica beaches

Estrada da Praia da Mata, Costa da Caparica, Setúbal

Description

The Costa da Caparica encompasses a continuous stretch of beach of 12-15km from the south of the mouth of the Tagus River until Lagoa de Albufeira. From north to south, the most popular beaches are Praia de São João, Praia do Tarquínio-Paraíso, Praia da Mata, and Praia Fonte da Telha. There are also some naturist beaches.

Access & Transport

The beaches have their own parking facilities and are linked by a small train called the Transpraia. From Lisbon, the area is just across the Ponte 25 de Abril, near the Belem district.

Instructions & Recommendations

Do not forget your sun-protective equipment and take note that Portuguese waters are known to be cold.

Meta review

The area is mostly patronized by locals and is not always featured in travel blogs that tend to focus on the Portuguese Riviera or jump straight to the Alentejo shores. Online reviews on the contrary are plenty and highlight the wide expanse, the ability to find parking space even in the summer, and the moderate development (with a few exceptions) and prices. Like elsewhere in Portugal, the ocean water is cold.

Environmental & Social

No carbon footprint linked to this attraction. Some economic benefits to the local community

Conclusion

Costa da Caparica offers many options for those looking to add some beach time to their itinerary. Provided you have a car, it is a quick hope from Lisbon and a much more natural environment than the Portuguese Riviera.
