Alcazaba de Almería

Calle Almanzor, Almería, Andalucía

Description

The Alcazaba of Almería is a fortified complex in Almería, Eastern Andalusia (the Arabic al-qaṣabah means "citadel"). It was developed in stages, starting in the 10th century, to protect the inland town of Pechina (the largest settlement in the area at the time). As often, there were two lines of defensive walls with the first enclosure used for the military camp and for population shelter in case of attack or siege and the inner one was for the aristocracy and their retinue to live in. Under the Catholic Monarchs, a castle and third enclosure were built. Most of the objects from the archaeological site at the Alcazaba are kept in the Museo de Almería (and some at the Alhambra Museum) and the Alcazaba regularly appears in TV series and movies.

Access & Transport

The complex is about 800m (10mins walk) west of the city centre and 1.5km west of the main bus and train station. Bus L1 stops next to it on Calle Almanzor Closest car parks: Plaza Marín and Puerta de Purchena Only partially accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, management should be contacted beforehand to facilitate and entrance is on calle Ramón Castilla Pérez. Instructions & Recommendations

Best to go early morning or in the evening in summertime to avoid the heat. The Cathedral is a short 5mins walk away.

Meta review

For many online reviewers, this is the best attraction in the city and it has the benefit of being either free (EU citizens) or very cheap. Visitors enjoy the well-restored defensive walls (clearly not in mint condition though) and the gardens + good views over the city. A few travellers were disappointed that there are no rooms to visit.

Environmental & Social

Green activity except for some electricity consumption (lighting). This attraction helps preserve the city's architectural and historical heritage

Conclusion

This is Almeria's landmark and best attraction. A good opportunity to learn more about the history of the region.

Key positive

Quite well restored

Centrally located and affordable entrance fee

Key negative

Little content and no deco

Completely exposed to the sun

Suitability

Partially accessible for wheelchair users.
