Almeria Cathedral

8 Plaza de la Catedral, Almería, Andalucía

Description

The Cathedral of Almería (Catedral de la Encarnación de Almería) is a Roman Catholic church built in the mid-16th century (after the earthquake that destroyed the previous temple in 1522). Originally designed in Gothic style by (presumably) Diego de Siloe, later architects introduced Renaissance elements and Baroque and Neoclassical features were added in the 18th century. The low naves and flat roof give a very unusual aspect to the structure and the defensive aspects seem to have prevailed on the aesthetic ones with a watchtower and few openings. Key features include the main facade, the capilla mayor, the choir area and the cloister.

Access & Transport

The Cathedral is on the namesake plaza, in the southwestern part of the central district. The closest bus stops are on C. La Reina (L1), C. Nicolas Salmeron (L1), Fuente de los Peces (L6), and Paseo de Almeria (L2, L6, L11, L18). The train station is 1.3km (15mins walk) to the east.

Instructions & Recommendations

This is a place of worship so visitors should behave appropriately and dress conservatively. We suggest combining this activity with the Alcazaba, 400m away.

Meta review

Online reviews are near unanimous that the monument is worth seeing when in Almeria mainly on the basis of its original architecture that makes its look like a cross between a church and a fort. Many positive comments about the plaza in front with its palm tree. As for the interior, opinions are mixed, many do not find anything noteworthy with it (likewise for the cloister) but those keen on religious monuments and arts, on the contrary, find it very ornate and single out the choir as the main highlight.

Environmental & Social

The ongoing environmental footprint is low. Helps maintain the city's cultural and architectural heritage

Conclusion

Although the interior is in a different category than the most famous and wealthy cathedrals in the country, it does have some genuinely interesting features and artwork. Couple this with the surprising but impressive exterior and this monument warrants a visit for those keen on cultural activities.
