Description
The Citadel of Sisteron dominates the town of Sisteron, between the Provence and Dauphiné regions, in the Southeast of France. It was built in the early 13th century to ensure control over the main path between the two regions along the Durance river, underwent several upgrades in the 16-18th centuries, and kept its defensive purpose until 1920.
Access & Transport
The Citadel is 1.2km away from the Sisteron train station. There are regional trains to Aix-en-Provence (80mins), Marseille (2h) and Gap (1h - continues on to Grenoble or Briançon). By car, Sisteron is 50km south of Gap, 40km west of Digne-les-Bains, 100km northeast of Aix-en-Provence and 140km northeast of Marseille.
Instructions & Recommendations
Whilst in Sisteron, the Cathedral is also worth a visit. This activity can easily be combined with a trip to Gap or Forcalquier, both 45mins drive away (but in opposite directions).
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. It helps preserve the town and region's architectural and historical heritages
Conclusion
The Sisteron Citadel is visually arresting, well maintained, has important regional historical relevance and offers great views to visitors. Highly recommended if visiting Provence and/or the French Southern Alps region.
