Description
Entrevaux is a medieval village alongside the Var river in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department in South Eastern France. Founded in the 11th century, it is primarily known for its defensive walls and the citadel dominating it that Vauban helped reinforce - it was successfully tested multiple times, including against the Duchy of Savoy in 1707. Other highlights include the 17th century Cathedral (Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption d'Entrevaux), several chapels, and a moto museum.
Access & Transport
The village is 40km from Castellane and 70km (75mins) northwest of Nice along the D6202. The Chemins de Fer de Provence have a tourist train linking Nice to Digne and stops in Entrevaux: https://www.cpzou.fr/en/
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a visit there with a drive to the Gorges de Daluis (separate review).
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Tourism helps preserve the region's architectural and cultural heritages and brings some economic influx to the village
Conclusion
Entrevaux is somewhat of an architectural gem in a region that does not lack forts but is better known for its dramatic landscapes. What stands out is the impression that the entire village is, in fact, a citadel and the actual citadel is but the ultimate defensive back-up. An excellent addition to a regional itinerary.
Key positive
Photogenic ruins of the fort and the village defensive walls
Key negative
Requires some time investment to get there
Suitability
Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility, except going up to the citadel
