Verdon rafting by Haute Provence Outdoor (intermediate)

D952, Castellane, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

Haute Provence Outdoor ("HPO") is a multi-activity operator based in Castellane, in the Verdon regional natural park, in the South West of France. Besides rafting, they run kayak, canyoning, all-terrain scooter and aqua-trekking trips in the area. The Verdon Gorge is France's most famous river canyon; it is 25km long, up to 700m deep and the colour of the river is turquoise. This review is for the 12km half-day (3h30 with 2h on-water) Castellane to Pont de Soleil route starting at either 10h00 or 14h30. The operator provides all safety equipment and a wetsuit All participants need to be able to swim and the minimum age for this option is 8years old.

Access & Transport

The meeting point is at Huttopia Campsite "Gorges du Verdon", changing rooms are available and customers will take a mini-bus to the starting point. The campsite is 60km south of Dignes Les Bains and 100km west of Nice. The LER 31 bus service links Castellane to Digne in 65mins and to Nice in 2h with a bus-to-train transfer in Cagnes sur Mer train station.

Instructions & Recommendations

Customers should bring a towel, wear a suitable attire such as swimsuit/short, t-shirts and closed shoes (mandatory), a dry bag, and some drinking water.

Meta review

HPO gets positive feedback from customers who point out the professional and friendly instructors who do not compromise on security. The organisation doesn't draw any negative review and, of course, there are the stunning views of the canyon.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity. This helps support small independent operators.

Conclusion

Rafting is definitely one of the most entertaining ways to experience the Gorges du Verdon and HPO is an operator with a proven track record and excellent reviews. It is a little expensive for a family but if that fits your budget then we would definitely recommend it, bearing in mind the activity is not available every day.
