Cannes city

Boulevard de la Croisette, Cannes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

Cannes is a city located in southwestern France, on the Cote d'Azur riviera. It is known for its luxury hotels, La Croisette promenade and its yearly Film Festival that attract global movie celebrities (generally scheduled in May). The first settlement dates from the 2nd century BC by a Celto-Ligurian tribe and most of the activity took place on the Lérins Islands. The city became independent in 1530 but its growth is linked to its popularity as a seaside destination with the English and Russian aristocracy thanks to a mild winter climate. Highlights of the city include the waterfront avenue Promenade de la Croisette lined by the beach and well-known hotels (such as the Hotel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes, the Hotel Martinez and the InterContinental Carlton Cannes), the villa Romée and villa Domergue, the Notre-Dame-d'Espérance church, the Sainte Marguerite Island, and the Marché Forville.

Access & Transport

Cannes is on the Marseille - Nice - Ventimiglia train line; it is a 25-35mins ride to Nice where the closest international airport is located By car, Nice is 35km to the east and Marseille 175km to the west

Instructions & Recommendations

If you have some spare time during the day or staying overnight in the city, we suggest checking out the village of Mougins in the hinterland or the town of Grasse, well known as a center of perfume production.

Meta review

The town is best known for La Croisette and the Film Festival. The former gets positive reviews for its designer shopping, nice beaches and impressive luxury hotels but the car traffic /exhausts and cleanliness of the sea water seem to be significant issues for some. Another popular activity is to explore the Lérins islands, in particular Île Saint-Honorat with its abbaye, and to enjoy nice views over the city and clear waters.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Socially, the benefits of tourism balance out the drawbacks of over-commercialisation.

Conclusion

Cannes lacks a top-tier attraction, be it cultural or architectural, but it forms a good base to explore the area (coastline and hinterland) and benefit from an enjoyable sea-side location. Its moderate size means it has many of the advantages of a large city without the inconvenients.

Key positive

Key negative

Busy with tourists in the summer and car traffic along the main promenade
