Gorges de Daluis

D2202, Guillaumes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

The Gorges de Daluis is a 6km long canyon between the villages of Guillaumes and Daluis in the Alpes-Maritimes department in South Eastern France. It was formed by the Var river cutting through red schist rock (sandstone coloured by iron oxide). The main sights include the Pont de la Mariée, a 80m-high bridge spanning 58m (bungee jumping can be done there) and the Tête de la Femme (woman's head) rock formation. The gorge is popular with cyclists and for rafting. There are 2 marked trails to explore the area: Circuit d'Amen (4h30, D+/- 600m) and Point Sublime (1h15).

Access & Transport

The gorges are 40km from Castellane and 85km (90mins) northwest of Nice along the D6202. The road running though the Gorges is the D2202.

Instructions & Recommendations

We strongly recommend the hike up to "Point Sublime" in order to get the best views over the Gorges (included in the estimated visit time). We suggest combining a drive / ride there with a visit of Entrevaux village (separate review).

Meta review

The gorges aren't on the radar of most foreign travel magazines and tourists but do get very good online reviews. Travellers enjoy the changing colours and advise other visitors to make the short hike to Point Sublime to enjoy panoramic views. They also recommend to go out of season to be able to drive slowly and make as many stops as you wish.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity and tourism brings some economic activity to the surrounding villages

Conclusion

The Gorges de Daluis take a bit of time to reach and are best visited as part of a regional itinerary. They offer travellers fantastic views over a very unusual red rock canyon, not as impressive as the Gorges du Verdon but also quite different and worth driving to for those on a slow travel mode.
