Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

1 Avenue Ephrussi de Rothschild, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is located in the seaside village of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, just to the east of Nice. Visitors can explore both the villa itself as well as its 9 gardens. The rose-coloured villa was built for Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild and her husband Baron Maurice de Ephrussi at the beginning of the 20th century; she donated it to the French Académie des Beaux-Arts at her death. It is filled with antique furniture, sculpture, rare porcelain and old master paintings. The gardens were designed by landscape architect Achille Duchêne and consist of different themes: French, Provencal, Spanish, Japanese, exotic, Florentine, stone, rose and Sèvres.

Access & Transport

By road: access by the lower cliff road (RD6098). A free car park is available on the site. By bus: line 15, "Passable - Rothschild" stop or ligne 100, "Point Saint Jean" stop and about 15 mins walk to the Villa. By train: the closest station is Beaulieu-sur-Mer, 2.2km away (walking distance) with semi-frequent services to Nice and other.

Instructions & Recommendations

It is strongly recommended to book a timed ticket online before visiting to ensure availability of slots

Meta review

The villa is an extremely popular attraction; visitors enjoy the magnificent gardens and views over Villefranche and the sea from there as well as the stunning house and artworks inside. For some though, the villa is overly decorated and lacks historical value. The app for self-guided tours seems to be helpful and lunch on the terrace very enjoyable, if pricey.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmental neutral. It helps spread the arts and preserve the town's architectural heritage.

Conclusion

Situated on the isthmus of Cap Ferrat, the villa occupies a privileged position that has been further enhanced by an impressive combination of landscaped gardens, elegant architecture and rather impressive art collection. In keeping with the area, the entrance is quite expensive though which means that we would only recommend a visit there for those with a flexible budget or who have a very strong liking for luxurious period furnishing.

Key positive

The gardens truly enhance an already grand setting and building

Key negative

Expensive for a cultural / art-related activity

Suitability

Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility. Suitable for all ages but best enjoyed by those > 12yrs old
