Albert Cuyp Market

Albert Cuypstraat, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland

Description

The Albert Cuyp Market is Amsterdam's largest and most famous street market. It started as a gathering of street traders and pushcarts that was formalized by the municipality in the early 1900's. It is located in the De Pijp area of the Oud-Zuid district and the market / street are named after the 17th century Dutch painter Albert Cuyp. Nowadays, the market operates six days a week (closed on Sundays) with 260 stalls selling fresh produces (vegetables, fruits, meat, fish) as well as clothing/fabrics, flowers and accessories. In addition, there is a lot of restaurants behind the stalls and in the surrounding streets.

Access & Transport

The Albert Cuyp street is close to the De Pijp metro/tram station (52, 3, 12, 24) at its western end and to the Stadhouderskade (4) tram stop at the eastern one. The Albert Cuyp tram stop (16, 24) is also nearby. For car and parking tips, please refer to the following link: https://albertcuyp-markt.amsterdam/bereikbaarheid/

Instructions & Recommendations

It makes sense to schedule a visit there around lunch time and try one of the food stalls. Other sights / activities in the area include the Heineken Experience and canal cruises leaving from Stadhouderskade.

Meta review

The street market is regularly featured on the lists of top things to see/do in Amsterdam, but opinions do really differ among reviewers, depending on personal profiles. For many the variety of stalls and things to buy in a real open-air bazaar-like atmosphere is enough to warrant a visit whilst for others the market is relatively ordinary, with typical food and clothes stalls.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral Socially marginally negative as it encourages consumerism and production/purchase of low-quality products

Conclusion

The Albert Cuyp Market is large in size and should feature quite high on the list of things to see for those intending to shop but don't expect a lot of original / artisanal crafts and top end fresh organic produces. For others, worth a quick detour when in the area but not a big miss if not.

Key positive
