Amsterdam Museum

51 Amstel, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland

Description

The Amsterdam Museum is the official history museum of the city, the collection spans the Middle Ages until the present time. Displayed items mostly include paintings, photographs and archaeological findings. The museum has historically been located in a former convent that was used as an orphanage from the 16th century until 1960 (at Kalverstraaat 92, between Dam Square and the Begijnhof) but the building is being overhauled so that it is now housed at Amstel 51 (alongside the H'ART Museum and Museum van de Geest) under the name of Amsterdam Museum at the Amstel, until at least 2025.

Access & Transport

Address: Amstel 51, 1018 DR Amsterdam The Waterlooplein metro and tram station (9, 14, 51, 53, 54) is 150m away The nearest carpark is Stadhuis-Muziektheater in Waterlooplein carpark.

Instructions & Recommendations

The all-in ticket is currently only available through the H'ART Museum website and grants admission to the three museums

Meta review

Online reviews for the original location were somewhat mixed (good intro to the city of Amsterdam but many glaring gaps and an odd lay-out). The latest online comments are not much better but should not really be relied o because a) some of them are clearly malicious, and b) the ticket price gives access to all three museums so it isn't fair to say there is little to see, unless the other museums are not of interest that is.

Environmental & Social

The building complies with the BREEAM-NL In-Use standards and has several projects to reduce energy intensity. It also shares excess heat with the Hortus Botanicus. Helps spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Amsterdam Museum doesn't tell the history of this fascinating city very well and comprehensively. Its collection also lacks the punch and masterpieces of the more famous cultural venues in the city. In short, it is only worth visiting alongside the H'ART Museum.

Key positive

Opportunity to learn more about the city's historical development

Key negative

Not top tier in term of content and display

Not comprehensive enough as a standalone venue (during the renovation period)

Suitability

Suitable for all ages even though younger kids may get bored quickly. Accessible to visitors with reduced mobility
