Singel Bloemenmarkt - by Massimo Catarinella (CC BY-SA 3.0)
Description
The Bloemenmarkt is a floating flower market founded in 1862 in Amsterdam along the Singel canal. The 15 or so shops are set up on fixed barges. Besides fresh flowers, bulbs (tulip especially) and plants, visitors can find Dutch cheese and other souvenirs.
Access & Transport
Address: 600-630 Singel, 1017 AZ Amsterdam The closest tram stops are 200m away each: Muntplein (24) and Koningsplein (2, 12) There is paying parking nearby: Flower Market/Rembrandtsquare.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a visit there with an exploration of the 9 Streets or Jordaan neighbourhoods, and of the Begijnhof (the Amsterdam Museum original location is also nearby but it has been relocated until 2025)
Environmental & Social
Environmentally we deem this activity marginally negative because of the cheap junk souvenirs. Socially neutral.
Conclusion
The Bloemenmarkt is an "only in Amsterdam" flower floating market that doesn't really deliver... Not only is there a limited number of shops but they all tend to sell the same things: flowers, tulip bulbs, tourist souvenirs and Dutch cheese (what a combination!). The floating aspect is also visually quite underwhelming. Worth a quick look if in the area but you won't miss much otherwise.
Key positive
Colourful stalls and enjoyable canal neighbourhood
Key negative
Overpriced goods and lack of differentiation between shops
Technically on barges but floating market feels like a misnomer
Suitability
Suitable for all ages and accessible to visitors with reduced mobility (decking extends seamlessly to the pavement)
