Amsterdam Canal cruise (Blue Boat)

501 Stadhouderskade, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland

Description

There are several operators offering cruises along Amsterdam various canals. This review is for the 75mins "City Canal Cruise" from Blue Boat. The route starts along Stadhouderskade, not far from the Museum Quarter, and takes in highlights such as Western Church, Anne Frank House, the Music Building, the National Maritime Museum and the Golden Bend.

Access & Transport

There are 2 boarding locations: A - Blue Boat dock at Stadhouderskade 550 (opposite the Heineken Experience) B - Blue Boat dock at Stadhouderskade 501 (opposite the Hard Rock Cafe) Location A is close to Vijzelgracht tram / metro station (1, 7 19, 24 and 52) whilst Location B is 2 mons from Leidseplein (1, 2, 5, 12) Note that the boats departing at 10h30, 12h00, 14h00, 15h30 and 17h00 are wheelchair accessible but the others are not.

Instructions & Recommendations

Advanced booking is the only way to guarantee seat availability at a specific time slot. Please be present at the dock at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time to enable smooth boarding and timely start

Meta review

The reviews (and rankings) for this specific cruise option are excellent; customers highlight the excellent views through the glass roof, the large choice of languages of the audio-guide and of course they enjoyed what they saw and this way of discovering the city. The only downsides seem to be the placement of seats/tables which means you may be facing backward (that makes the audio description harder to follow without turning constantly) and the route which doesn't go through the city center inner and smaller canals.

Environmental & Social

Some boats run on fossil fuels but others are electric so heading in the right direction. Neutral from a social perspective.

Conclusion

The Canal Cruise operated by Blue Boat provides passengers with a different viewing angle over some of the best architecture in the city (bridges, canal houses and churches) at a reasonable price - it is however not a substitute to a more extensive walk through the various neighbourhoods.

Key positive

Able to enjoy the views in most weather conditions thanks to the glass roof

Key negative

The audio-guide is useful (especially in several languages) but not very lively

Suitability

Suitable for all ages. Some boat, but not all, are accessible for wheelchair users
