H'ART Museum

51 Amstel, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland

Description

The H’ART Museum started operating under its new name in September 2023 after severing ties with the Hermitage in St Petersburg. Currently lacking a permanent collection, it is displayed artwork on loan from other institutions and will hold world class temporary exhibitions over the next 5-6 years in partnerships with Paris’ Centre Pompidou, London's British Museum and Washington DC’s Smithsonian American Art Museum. The first one was mid-June 2024 on W. Kandinsky. The museum is housed in a former retirement home built in the late 17th century in classical style on the banks of the Amstel River. There may still be a permanent exhibition about the history of the building (the Amstelhof).

Access & Transport

Address: Amstel 51, 1018 DR Amsterdam The Waterlooplein metro and tram station (9, 14, 51, 53, 54) is 150m away The nearest carpark is Stadhuis-Muziektheater in Waterlooplein carpark.

Instructions & Recommendations

An all-in ticket is currently only available through the H'ART Museum website and grants admission to the three museums in the same premises: H'ART, Amsterdam Museum and Museum van de Geest. Geographically, this activity can easily be combined with the Hortus Botanicus or Artis Zoo, the Rembrandt House Museum, or the Waterlooplein flea market.

Meta review

The museum only started operating under its new name and content in Sept'23 and the first major exhibition (Kandinsky) had only just started at the time of this review update. So far the online reviews are quite mediocre, those about the Julius Caesar exhibition in particular. Those who had visited the previous Hermitage incarnation do miss it...

Environmental & Social

The building complies with the BREEAM-NL In-Use standards and has several projects to reduce energy intensity. It also shares excess heat with the Hortus Botanicus. Helps spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

Too early to comment on the content given the museum just pressed the reset button, it will need time to develop a strong permanent collection. That being said, it certainly benefits from a picturesque setting in a historic building.

Key positive

Nice setting and interesting building history

Partnerships with high profile museums for upcoming temporary exhibitions

Key negative

Not worth the entry price as a standalone

Suitability

Suitable for all ages but children under 12 may not find it very interesting. Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
