Museum Ons'Lieve Heer Op Solder

Dam, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland

Description

Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder ( "Our Lord in the Attic") is a preserved 17th century "clandestine church" or house church built within the top three floors of a canal house in the city center of Amsterdam. These venues were created after the Dutch Reformation by religious minorities for worship and were tolerated on condition that it remained discreet and did not take place within public spaces. It became a museum in 1888 and consists of several rooms, a chapel, a confessional, and even a kitchen.

Access & Transport

Address: Oudezijds Voorburgwal 38, 1012 GD Amsterdam It is possible to get there walking from many other sights in the city centre. The closest stations are Centraal Station (metro, train and tram lines), Nieuwmarkt (51, 53, 54) and Dam (1, 2, 5, 13, 17, 4, 9, 16, 24). Steep and narrow stairs are the only way to access the church floors so this may be a challenge to most visitors with reduced mobility.

Instructions & Recommendations

If you are in the mood for churches, De Oude Kerk and the Basilica of Saint Nicholas are both close by.

Meta review

Excellent reviews for this museum with accessibility (steep stairs) and price being the only drawback pointed out in a regular manner. Visitors enjoy the pace and content of the visit which include a short video and a self-guided concise audio-tour with the option of extra information if so desired. They are also surprised by the contrast between the rather dark and small family rooms and the large and well-lit house church that includes nice paintings and an impressive pipe organ.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Entrance fees help preserve this historic building, part of the city's architectural and cultural heritage

Conclusion

The Ons'Lieve Heer Op Solder museum is a little under the radar in a city filled with cultural venues but it doesn't just have a fancy name; it is truly original and shines a light on the issue of religious freedom and tolerance, or lack thereof, and the ingenuity of religious minorities to continue worshiping. The venue is quite small, so it is pretty easy to slot in a visit as you happen to be in the area. Strongly recommended if you are curious about the religious history and culture of Amsterdam.
