National Maritime Museum, Amsterdam

1 Kattenburgerplein, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland

Description

The National Maritime Museum (Het Scheepvaartmuseum) is housed in a 17th century naval storehouse in the Kattenburg neighbourhood of central Amsterdam. It covers Dutch maritime history and its collection includes ship models, maps, navigation instruments, paintings as well as a replica of the Amsterdam, an 18th century VOC ship (belonging to the Dutch East India Company) that sailed between the Netherlands and the East Indies.

Address: Kattenburgerplein 1, 1018 KK Amsterdam There are plenty of bicycle parking available in front of and near the museum and it is only a 5-10mins ride from the center of the city or 20mins by foot from the Central Station (1.5km) Bus 22 (Muiderpoortstation) or bus 43 (Borneo Eiland) stop nearby. The closest tram station is Plantage Parklaan (9, 14) 700m away and Waterlooplein metro station (9, 14, 51, 53, 54) is 15mins/1.1km away. The museum is a short walk from the NEMO science museum, the Artis Zoo and the Hortus Botanicus (Botanical Gardens)

Meta review

Reviewers highlight the impressive and beautiful building, the ability to visit the Amsterdam VOC ship and the quality of the maritime paintings but there are many visitors who feel that something was lacking, especially as relates to the Dutch maritime history. Some recurring comments that the museum layout is too complicated / not intuitive.

Environmental & Social

We could not find any environmental data or policy and deem this aspect neutral. Socially, marginally positive as it seeks to preserve the nation's cultural heritage and tries to raise awareness against racism through some of its exhibitions

Conclusion

In our view, the National Maritime Museum lacks educational content explaining the importance of maritime development and trade on the country's economy and historical course (including its colonial past). That being said, we still think it is very much a worthwhile activity that should be of interest to adults and families alike.

Key positive

Full size replica and impressive 17th century naval building

Interesting maps, navigation instruments and sailing / shipping related artefacts

Key negative

Should develop the Dutch maritime history angle more

Suitability

Suitable for all ages and accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, including the ship's replica that is partially accessible via a lift.
