Rembrandt House Museum

4 Jodenbreestraat, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland

Description

The Rembrandt House Museum (in Dutch: Museum Het Rembrandthuis) is set in the house where the painter Rembrandt lived and worked between 1639 and 1656 (when he went bankrupt and his possessions were sold). It has been reconstructed and refurnished to replicate its 17th century original look and the collection mostly consists of some of his etchings (rotating display) and paintings from some of his Dutch Golden Age contemporaries.

Access & Transport

Address: Jodenbreestraat 4, 1011 NK Amsterdam The Waterlooplein metro and tram station (9, 14, 51, 53, 54) is 300m away (3mins walk) There are several paying parking options nearby

Instructions & Recommendations

Geographically, this activity can easily be combined with the Hortus Botanicus or Artis Zoo, the Oude Church, the Hermitage Amsterdam, the Waterlooplein flea market, or the NEMO Science Museum.

Meta review

Most visitors enjoy the opportunity to learn more about the artist life, the history and living conditions of the time in this beautiful house (although sparsely furnished) but there are recurring comments that the attraction isn't amazing, unless you are a Rembrandt and/or art history buff. Many reviewers also stated that the entrance fee was expensive considering the content, that the audio guide was good and that they were disappointed at the absence of the artist's own paintings - something that the museum doesn't claim to have but that most people would assume is there...

Environmental & Social

We could not find any environmental data and no museum mission beyond promoting the artist' life, work and the house. We deem this activity environmentally neutral and marginally positive from a social standpoint for promoting the arts and preserving part of the city's cultural and architectural heritage.

Conclusion

The Rembrandt House Museum is a nice, if a little expensive, cultural activity but it doesn't compare in scale and content to any of the large museums. We would recommend a visit to those with plenty of time in the city or who have a special interest for Dutch Golden Age painters.

Key positive

Being able to visit the artist's home and workshop as they were 350 years ago

Key negative

No Rembrandt paintings (but there are etchings)

Price on the high side

Suitability

Suitable for all ages but children under 12 may not find it very interesting. Only a small part of the house is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility as there are steep stairs to the upper floors.
