Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

6 Museumplein, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland

Description

The Van Gogh Museum contains the largest collection of the artist paintings and drawings in the world. It is located in the center of Amsterdam and is one of the two most visited museum in the country (sometimes ranking ahead of its close neighbour the Rijksmuseum). The museum actually consists of two buildings: the Rietveld building (from the permanent collection) designed by Gerrit Rietveld, and the Kurokawa wing (used for temporary exhibitions) by Kisho Kurokawa. The core of the collection is from works unsold during Van Gogh's lifetime or by his wife and heirs. Some of the most famous paintings there include Sunflowers, The Yellow House, Almond Blossoms and several self-portraits. There are also artworks from Impressionist and post-Impressionist painters such as Gauguin, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec and sculptures by Rodin and Dalou.

Access & Transport

The museum is located in the city's museum quarter at Museummstraat 1. Tram lines #2 and #5 transit through Museumplein station with Van Baerlestraat (3, 5, 12) also nearby. Paid parking is available close to the museum such as the Q-Park Museumplein underground car at Van Baerlestraat 33b. Accessibility info: https://www.vangoghmuseum.nl/en/visit/accessibility

Meta review

The museum is well known internationally and widely considered one of the city's highlights, which translates into quite crowded rooms sometimes. Reviewer's love seeing so many works from the artist in one location and also highlight the good layout and audio-tour as well as the enjoyable modern building. The main griefs shared by reviewers are the sometimes-aggressive security staff and the entrance fee that many visitors deem to be too high.

Environmental & Social

Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture and the arts. Some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity) but it implements several sustainability-driven actions such energy efficiency and some CO2 offset. It has a "very good" BREAAM-NL In-Use rating. More info here: https://www.vangoghmuseum.nl/en/about/organisation/sustainability

Conclusion

The Van Gogh Museum is one of Amsterdam's cultural highlights and, even if you are not familiar with the artist's work, we would strongly recommend a visit there as it brings many masterpieces under one roof but also provide visitors with a comprehensive information about his artistic development.
