Vondelpark - by Luisa Escribano on Google
Description
The Vondelpark is a large (47ha) public park situated to the southwest of the center of Amsterdam, in the borough of Amsterdam-Zuid. It opened in 1865 after an association of citizens bought peripheral grassland and marshes to create a new park called "Het Nieuwe Park" (meaning "The New Park"). The change of name came from the statue of playwright Joost van den Vondel by sculptor Louis Royer installed in 1867. The park became the property of the municipality in 1953. It consists of various gardens, small lakes/ponds, bike paths, an open air-theatre, a children's playgrounds, and various F&B venues.
Access & Transport
Vondelpark is situated just to the west of the Museumplein and the southwest of Leidseplein. The best tram stations for accessing it are Leidseplein (1, 2 5, 7, 12, 17, 19), Van Baerlestraat (2, 3, 5, 12), '1e Con. Huygensstraat' (1, 3, 12), and further stations along line 1 and Cornelis Schuytstraat (2).
Instructions & Recommendations
We recommend combining a walk (and picnic?) in the park with a visit to one of the nearby museums in Museumplein.
