Description
Waterlooplein Market is oldest flea market in the Netherlands. It is located on Waterloo Square in Central Amsterdam and consists of about three hundred stalls selling anything from second books, vintage clothes, and cameras as well as various food trucks. Historically, a Jewish market was created there at the end of the 19th century but it disappeared during WW2 after which a more general bazaar sprung up in the 1960's. The market is open 6 days a week (closed on Sundays).
Access & Transport
Address: Waterlooplein, 1011 NZ Amsterdam The market is walking distance from Dam Square and Central Station and next to Waterlooplein metro/tram station (51, 53, 54, 14). There are parking options at Valkenburgerstraat 238 and Stadhuis - Muziektheater.
Instructions & Recommendations
Beware of pickpockets when you visit. This activity can easily be combined with the Rembrandt House Museum and H'ART Museum.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral and supports small independent stall owners.
Conclusion
The Waterlooplein flea market will for many be an enjoyable alternative to the various museums in the city but don't expect a truly "only in Amsterdam" shopping experience. If you have no interest in shopping for cheap clothes and souvenirs you can skip this.
