Church of Santa Coloma d'Andorra

Carrer Major, Santa Coloma, Andorra la Vella

Description

The Church of Santa Coloma d'Andorra is the oldest church in the Principality of Andorra. The pre-Romanesque nave dates from the 8th century and the Lombard bell tower was built in the 12th with murals painted by the Master of Sant Coloma (most of those were removed and are now in the Andorran Government Exhibition Hall). Besides the characteristic stone construction and the few remaining murals, highlights include a polychrome wood carving of the Virgin of the Remedy and an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece dedicated to Santa Coloma, the church’s patron saint.

Access & Transport

Address: Carrer Major, Santa Coloma The church is 4km southwest of Andorra la Vella just off the main CG-1 road

Instructions & Recommendations

Guided visits are available with prior appointment for an extra 1,50 € per person We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the country's capital: Andorra La Vella

Meta review

The church is considered by many reviewers to be the most original and interesting in Andorra. A guided visit is recommended and so is a look at the Espai Columba museum (where the tours are arranged) which is just across the church and parking area, in the middle of the large roundabout structure - something that many visitors think is quite inconvenient.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral (no carbon footprint). Positive from a social perspective as it helps preserve the region's cultural and architectural heritages

Conclusion

This small church, when combined with the Espai Columba museum across the road, is without a doubt one of the cultural highlights of the Principality. It is a quick but interesting visit on the way to / from Andorra la Vella.

Key positive

Well preserved structure

Within the local bus system "catchment area"

Key negative

Very small and most murals are no longer there

Suitability

The museum is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility but not the interior of the church (although the exterior still warrants a look around)
