Museo Carmen Thyssen Andorra - by Antonio Arregui on Google
Description
The Carmen Thyssen Andorra Museum holds annual temporary exhibitions with works loaned by the famous Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection in Madrid. It is housed on the ground floor of Hostal Valira which is known for its granite facade arranged in a honeycomb structure and was one of the oldest hotel and thermal establishments in Andorra. Most of the artwork is from the 19-20th century but there are some older paintings as well. At the time of review, the exposition was "Khroma. The Emotional Universe of Colour" which followed "Made in Paris. The generation of Matisse, Lagar and Foujita".
Access & Transport
Address: Av. Carlemany, 37, AD700 Escaldes-Engordany, Andorra The museum is located at the eastern end of town, near the river and the Centre d'Art d'Escaldes-Engordany.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with a visit of Andorra la Vella
Environmental & Social
Repurposing of an existing building and brings international level art to regions that could not otherwise afford it
Conclusion
We like the concept of Museo Carmen Thyssen Andorra which enables smaller towns to access the otherwise unaffordable paintings owned - and not always displayed - by the largest museums in the world. If only it was 3 times the current size, it would become a must-visit in Andorra.
Key positive
Most exhibitions have a few highly regarded artworks
Key negative
Small exhibitions which makes value debatable (for those paying full price)
Suitability
Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
