Description
Alquézar is a village situated on a limestone outcrop to the west of the canyon of the Rio Vero in the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park. It is centred around a fortress church (from which its name is derived: 'al qaçr' in Arabic = 'alcazar' in Spanish), the Collegiate church of Santa Maria and the original fortress dating from the 9th century and the Gothic cloister from the 14th century. On the edge of town, the Pasarelas del Vero (suspended walkways along the Gorge of the Vero river) is a popular attraction.
Access & Transport
The village is 20km north of Barbastro (A-1232) and 50km east of Huesca (A-22/N-240 then A-1229). There are parkings at the edge of the village
Instructions & Recommendations
There are several operators based in the village that organize outdoor activities such as canyoning, rock climbing and abseiling.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the region's architectural and cultural heritages and brings some economic influx to the village; although that comes with a degree of over-commercialization
Conclusion
A visually attractive village in a beautiful natural setting - avoid the peak tourist season though, unless you intend to participate in outdoor activities leaving from there.
