Bodega Sommos - visit & wine tasting

Km 155 N-240, Barbastro, Aragón

Description

Bodega SOMMOS is located in the east of Huesca Province and produces wines belonging to the Somontano DOC, a transition zone between the valley of the Ebro River and the Pyrenees. They use wines from different varietals such as Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The estate is famous in the wine industry for the striking architecture of its production and reception facilities: cubes and lines of steel & glass creating generous interior spaces. The tour reviewed here is conducted in Spanish and lasts 90mins. It covers the vineyard and winery works, a visit of the production facilities, and tasting of 3 wines.

Access & Transport

The winery is 500m off the N-240, about 6km south of Barbastro. From Huesca, it is a 55km drive, from Lleida (Catalunya) 65km, and from Zaragoza 130km (via Huesca and Barbastro).

Instructions & Recommendations

The restaurant is well rated so lunch there can be a good complement to a wine tasting and visit. It is closed on Mondays though.

Meta review

Mixed online reviews (sifting through the fake ones) for the classic tour experience at this Bodega; the facilities and architecture are clearly described as impressive but many visitors comment that too much focus and time is spent covering those aspects and production numbers rather than actually in tasting the wine and Q&A. As for the wine, the sense is that it doesn't live up to the expectations: ok but nothing more. The restaurant, on the other hand, gets the thumbs up.

Environmental & Social

Do we really need all that steel and glass to make wine? For this bodega, the terroir aspect loses out to the alcohol element

Conclusion

Worth a visit for the architecture, technology and restaurant more than the wine so worth checking out if passing through the area but you may consider other winery options.
