Jaca Citadel & Museum of Military Miniatures

Avenida del Primer Viernes de Mayo, Jaca, Aragón

Description

The Citadel of Jaca was built in the late 16th to early 17th century as part of a wider defensive strategy against France and the French Protestants ('Huguenots') during the wars of religion. Its design follows a five-pointed star plan with moats, drawbridge and bastions. One of the barracks inside houses the Museum of Military Miniatures that features over 35,000 lead figures (1:87 scale) over 23 thematic exhibits, many of which recreate actual historical battles since Ancient Greece up to the 20th century.

Access & Transport

The Citadel and Museum are in the centre of Jaca, 1h drive north of Huesca and 150km north of Zaragoza via the A-23.

Instructions & Recommendations

For 2/1€ more (per pers.) it is possible to attend the 45mins guided visit of the citadel that takes place, presumably in Spanish only, at 11h, 12h30, 16h30, and 18h00

Meta review

The citadel is obviously described as a must see in Jaca with online reviewers stating that renovations are excellent and the info dedicated to different units of the Spanish Army adds some interest to a visit that can be a bit dry otherwise - unless you attend the guided tour. The museum of military miniatures is qualified of both impressive and curious.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the city's historical and architectural heritages.

Conclusion

One of the highlights of the area, the citadel is worth exploring and will be best enjoyed by history and military history buffs. The military miniatures museum adds an original, kid-friendly, aspect to the visit.
