Castillo de Valderrobres, Aragon

Calle Buen Aire, Valderrobres, Aragón

Description

The Castle of Valderrobres was mostly built during the 14th century, for the local archbishops, but has its origins as early as the 12th century. It is more residential than defensive in nature and forms an architectural tandem with the church of Santa María La Mayor. Little remains inside but the structure has been partially renovated and visitors can explore the Sala de las Cortes, Sala de los Leones, the Golden Chamber as well as the kitchen, cellars and stables.

Access & Transport

The castle is in the center of Valderrobres, a small town in the far southeast of Aragon, close to Catalunya. From Zaragoza, it is a 140km drive on the N232 and N-420. The next closest city is Tarragona (Catalunya), 125km to the northeast.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit there with an outdoor activity such as cycling the Vía Verde (Green Line) del Val de Zafán.

Meta review

Mixed online reviews for this castle with many visitors disappointed by the lack of any furnishing and decoration inside, making the entrance price high considering what there is to see. However, with the help of the audioguide and combined with a visit of the museum and the church, many do enjoy their time there.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the region's architectural and cultural heritage

Conclusion

The Castillo de Valderrobres is visually arresting but, in our opinion, it lacks historical relevance and more "cultural substance". We think there are better alternatives in Aragon but if you are road-tripping in the area it is worth a stop.
