Description
The Mausoleo de los Amantes is a monument cum museum documenting the story of the Lovers of Teruel, a romance alleged to have taken place in the city in the early 13th century and that has inspired several works of literature and paintings in the country. Two embalmed bodies were found in the Church of San Pedro in Teruel in 1533 and assumed to be those of the lovers. In 1955, they were transferred to new marble tombs sculpted by Juan de Ávalos. They are located next to the Mudejar complex of San Pedro and the entrance ticket also provide access to the church, cloister and tower of San Pedro. The church was built in the 14th century with Aragonese Mudéjar design and its interior decorated in modernista neo-mudéjar style at the end of the 19th century.
Access & Transport
The church is in the centre of the historical neighbourhood of Teruel, less than 100m to the southeast of the Plaza de El Torico. The closest large city is Valencia, 140km away on the A-23. Zaragoza is 170km to the north.
