Description
Tarazona is a town located at the historical border between the kingdoms of Aragon, Navarra and Castile that gave it its strategic value as a 'neutral' enclave where pacts and royal weddings could take place - until the unification of the Crowns of Castile and Aragon. The architectural and archaeological heritage of the town goes back to the 1st century BC and the tourist highlights include the octagonal bullring from the 18th century formed by 32 houses that are still inhabited today, the Jewish quarter, the 16th century Town Hall built on the Plaza Mayor, the Hanging Houses of the Cinto neighbourhood, the Episcopal Palace that was once used as the residence of the kings of Aragon and remodelled in Renaissance style, and the Church of Santa María Magdalena built in Romanesque-Mudejar style.
Access & Transport
Tarazona is 85km to the northwest of Zaragoza (70mins drive) on the AP-68 then N-122, 110km southeast of Logroño (La Rioja) and 115km south of Pamplona (Navarra). It is possible to get there by train, changing in Tudela; this can be done in 90mins from Zaragoza.

Environmental & Social
The main activities in the city have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy.
Conclusion
A very good day-trip option from Zaragoza (or transiting between Aragon and Navara/Rioja) for those who enjoy medieval architecture and/or history. The recent renovations have given the Cathedral a fresh look and, together with the old bullring, it does put the town on the tourist map.
