Benaki Museum of Greek Culture

Koumpari, Athina,

Description

The Benaki Museum of Greek Culture is housed in the neo-classical Benakis family mansion in Athens and its core collection spans Prehistoric, Ancient Greek and Roman antiquities. Items include pottery, jewellery, sculptures and portraits. This is complemented by Byzantine Art consisting, inter alia, of religious icons as well as bronze and silver household and ecclesiastical vessels, miniature sculptures and ceramics, and by collections of ecclesiastical and secular art covering the historical period from the 15th to the 19th centuries, including the reconstructions of wood-panelled rooms from houses in Kozani, Siatista and Hydra. Finally, there are paintings and drawings by artists who either visited Greek lands, or were inspired by Greek history and culture.

Access & Transport

The museum is located in central Athens, across Leof. Vasilissis Sofia from the National Garden and 500m east of Syntagma square. The closest metro stations are Syntagma (2, 3) and Evangelismos (3), both a 10 mins walk away.

Instructions & Recommendations

Nearby attractions include the Athens National Garden & Zappeion Hall, the Lyceum of Aristotle (archaeological site), Lycabettus Hill, and the Panathenaic Stadium. For those who don't mind another museum, the Byzantine and Christian Museum is only 400m away.

Meta review

This is a rather well-rated cultural attraction and most online reviews highlight the mosaics, the Greek folk dresses, the replicas of rooms with wooden panels, the icons as well as the building itself. However, there seems to lack a context overlay to the various rooms so that the collections can feel like a long list of unrelated artefacts. Recuring mentions of the English translation being hard to read because of the font colour and of the upstairs restaurant having nice views.

Environmental & Social

No online info regarding environmental aspects. Some electricity consumption but housed in a repurposed building. Spreads culture and the arts + helps preserve the city's architectural heritage

Conclusion

The Benaki Museum of Greek Culture is one of the best cultural options for those with interests other than the Greek and Roman antiquity period (it's there as well but it isn't the highlight). We would recommend this attraction for amateurs of religious and decorative arts, for others it is very much optional and certainly not a must-see during a first visit to Athens.
