Piraiki & Marina Zeas, Piraeus

Akti Moutsopoulou, Pireas,

Description

Piraiki is a neighbourhood of Piraeus, the main port of Athens and ferry getaway to the Agean islands, it is a peninsula with a rocky shore surrounded on 3 sides by the Saronic Gulf / Agean Sea. The area is known for its affordable, authentic seafood restaurants and taverns. Marina Zeas is adjacent to Piraiki, it is rather upmarket with moored yachts on one side and cafes, bars and restaurants on the other. In between both are the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus and the Hellenic Maritime Museum.

Access & Transport

Piraeus is 8km southwest of Athens' city centre. Athen's Metro line 3 now extends to Dimotiko Theatro station, a 10 mins walk from the marina. Alternatively, the line 1 and suburban trains go to the 'Piraeus' station, next to the port. Marina Zeus is immediately south of the commercial centre of Piraeus (defined here as the area around the Municipal Theatre) and the Piraiki neighbourhood extends from there an extra 2km towards the southwest.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a couple of hours in the Piraiki neighbourhood with a visit of the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus and/or the Hellenic Maritime Museum, a look at the Municipal Theatre Of Piraeus and the modern Hagia Triada Cathedral (Holy Trinity).

Meta review

Piraeus is a name that comes up when tourists ask about side-trips from Athens and the consistent answer is that it is worth a few hours, casually strolling the downtown area, all the way down to Piraiki - even the port is worth checking out. Piraiki draws positive comments for its fish tavernas, the coastline that is a little reminiscent of the Greek islands, the Chapel of Agios Nikolaos, and the Church of Saint Nilus. As for Marina Zeas, it is a safe, enjoyable place for a casual seaside walk with some good cafes at hand and expensive boats to look at.

Environmental & Social

Urban environment but tourism doesn't have an incremental carbon footprint. Socially neutral

Conclusion

Piraeus's name is associated with its harbour, which is seldom the most scenic area of a city, but that doesn't mean there are no gems to be discovered. Piraiki will appeal to those seeking a more authentic vibe, the sight of the sea and better priced tavernas & seafood restaurants Vs downtown Athens. The Marina definitely doesn't have that popular feel and shows yet another side of Piraeus. Best recommended for repeat visitors to Athens with a spare half-day.
