Varvakios central market, Athens - by Joep Deumes on Google

Description
Varvakios central market is Athens' best-known food market and one of the largest fish markets in Europe. There are also stalls selling meat, fruits & vegetables (including plenty of olives), cheese, herbs & spices, as well cooked food and meze.
Access & Transport
The market is located on Athinas Street in central Athens, one block south of Kotzia Square. The closest metro station is Omonia (1, 2), a 5 mins walk away.
Instructions & Recommendations
Best to head there early in the day to avoid the increasing temperature and have the best choice of fresh produce. Nearby attractions include the Church of Panagia Kapnikarea (500m away) and the National Archaeological Museum (15 mins walk).
Environmental & Social
No environmental and sourcing data The small / independent producers & stall owners aspect is a positive from a social perspective but not the fresh meat & fish
Conclusion
Varvakios is, for the moment, not riding the gentrified food market wave so the experience feels authentic but also quite raw. Not the best place to eat yet one of the better options if planning to cook. Vegetarians & vegans may want to pass on that one.
Key positive
One of the best place for fish shopping with reasonable prices
Wide array of food products
Key negative
The market hall isn't very attractive
Some aggressive behaviour
Suitability
Not for those who dislike the sight of whole fresh fish and meat. Accessible to visitors with reduced mobility
