Description
Narbonne Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur) was constructed during the 13-14th centuries in Southern French Gothic style but it remained unfinished. Architectural highlights include the height of its nave (41m, the 4th highest in France), its sturdy flying buttresses, the cloister that is linked to the Bishop's palace. Inside, the church is embellished with large stained glass windows, an organ and several chapels with paintings and altars. It is complemented by a Treasury exhibiting statues and reliquaries, and a chapel (Annonciade) underneath it.
Access & Transport
The church is in the centre of town, 800m south of the train station. Narbonne is located on the high speed train line between Montpellier, Perpignan, and Toulouse (the line bifurcates there). Montpellier is 1h20m drive away (95km on the A9) and Toulouse 1h45 (150km on the A61).
Instructions & Recommendations
The Palais des Archevêques (Archbishop Palace) next to it is arguably the best cultural attraction in Narbonne, together with the Cathedral. At the time of this review the Old Palace was closed for renovation
Environmental & Social
The ongoing environmental footprint is low. Helps maintain the town's artistic and architectural heritages
Conclusion
An icon of Narbonne, the cathedral's unfinished aspect is actually part of its attraction and we think the interior is truly worth a visit; in fact we would recommend religious art and/or architecture buffs to upgrade to a guided tour.
