Description
The Walls of Ávila are the best-preserved medieval fortifications of such scale in Spain. They were built between the 11th and the 14th century and form a perimeter of 2500m with an average height of 12m and width of 3m. They are punctuated with 88 semi-circular towers (the apse of the cathedral forming one of them) and 9 gates. There are 4 access points for visitors, including one suitable for the disabled, and 1700m can be covered. The following link provides a comprehensive description of the route: http://muralladeavila.com/en/plan-your-visit/route-around-the-walls
Access & Transport
The main and easiest access point is the one next to the cathedral which is also close to the visitors' centre. Avila is 110km west of Madrid (train takes 90mins from Principe Pio station) and Salamanca is 105km to the northwest (65mins by train)
Instructions & Recommendations
You should avoid mid-afternoon when the weather is too hot since it is completely exposed. We suggest combining a walk on the walls with a visit of the cathedral or the Basilica of San Vicente.
Environmental & Social
No carbon footprint and preserves the architectural heritage of the town. Tourism also brings economic activity to the town.
Conclusion
Avila is in many ways defined by its walls; those give the town its unmistakable allure. You won't be blown away by the richness of the details but rather by the extent. Size does matter sometimes.
Key positive
Visually impressive stretch of defensive walls
Key negative
The walk itself doesn't add much to the sight of the walls
Suitability
Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility (one access point)
