Description
Tanah Lot is home to Bali's most iconic Hindu Temple: Pura Tanah Lot. It is located 20km northwest of Denpasar, on a rock formation about 200m offshore; "Tanah Lot" literally means "Land in the Sea". It was built in the 16th century and is one of seven sea temples around the island. The main deity worshipped is Dewa Baruna (or Bhatara Segara), the sea god.
Access & Transport
Address: Jl. Tanah Lot, Beraban, Kediri The temple is 20km northwest of Seminyak, 17km west of Denpasar and 30km southwest of Ubud. It is best reached by taxi or scooter.
Instructions & Recommendations
Sunset is the most popular time of the day to visit and it can get crowded. If your schedule matches, the Odalan (or Piodalan) ceremony takes place every 210 days and sees rows of Balinese women carrying offerings on their head to the temple.
Environmental & Social
Theoretically environmentally green but there is a lot of waste left by tourists and vendors alike. It is unclear what the fees are used for
Conclusion
We'll agree with the hype here: Tanah Lot is a truly special sights and we would strongly advise any first-time visitor to the island to make the trip there. In fact, it is worth seeing again if you are lucky enough to return! We only wish the whole experience had not become so commercial over the last few years; and why charge an entrance fee when there is hardly any maintenance cost involved?
Key positive
Gorgeous setting
Key negative
Crowded in the evenings
We do not think tourists should be paying for the view
Suitability
Visitors with reduced mobility will need some assistance as there are stairs involved. Our understanding is that only worshippers are able to get in the temple proper.
