Description
Amed is a strip of fishing villages stretching nearly 15km on Bali's northeast coast. It is known for its laidback atmosphere, black volcanic sand beaches, and excellent diving that extends up to Tulamben (and the US Liberty wreck), a 25-30mins drive away and easily accessible for day trips. From west to east, the villages are Amed, Jemuluk, Bunutan, Lipah, Selang, Banyuning, and Aas.
Access & Transport
Amed is 70km / 2h30 northwest of Ubud, 85km / 2h45 from Sanur and 95km / 3h from the Kuta-Seminyak stretch. To Singaraja on the north coast of the island, it is an 80km / 2h15 drive. Most of the dive shops, restaurants and hotels are located along or close to the coastal road.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest staying one or several nights in one of the villages and using it as a base to discover the area. Activities include yoga, scuba diving, free diving, hiking and the Lempuyang temple (15km away).
Environmental & Social
We deem this activity environmentally slightly negative because of the ongoing over-development. Tourism helps inject activity in the rural economy but, like elsewhere in Bali, the negative impact on behaviours is spreading
Conclusion
The seaside villages of Amed are a completely different side of Bali, and we do not mean just geographically. They are much more laid back and less busy than South Bali and Ubud, and offer a wide range of water activities thanks to a rich marine life. Some will be instantly attracted by this description and others probably not so much, therefore follow your instinct.
