Description
Gunung Batur is one of Bali's best known and most scenic volcanoes. The stratovolcano is still active and culminates at 1,717m; it lies within a large caldera directly west of Lake Batur. This review is for the out-and-back hike to the summit starting near the lake. It is about 7km in total with an elevation gain of 530m and isn't technical, making it appropriate for any hiker (novice included) with an intermediate fitness level. Like many mountain tops in Asia, it is quite popular to time your start to be at the stop for sunrise, both to enjoy the view and to avoid the heat of the day.
Access & Transport
The start point is from the village of Batur Tengah, on the western shore of Lake Batur. It is an 8km drive from the rim of the caldera in Kintamani and 38km / 1h15 to Ubud.
Instructions & Recommendations
Make sure you wear proper shoes (hiking shoes are not an absolute requirement, trail running shoes will do nicely) and carry enough water for the journey as well as sun protective equipment and a sweater (can be windy and chilly at the top). We do suggest sleeping in a guesthouse near Lake Batur to avoid having to drive many kms during the night. No map is required, just keep going straight up. If you are not feeling confident, you can hire the services of a guide in the village.
Environmental & Social
Eco-friendly activity. Brings some revenues to the villages in the area
Conclusion
The hike up to Mount Batur summit is one of the most scenic on the island and can be done independently quite easily. Sunrise is great but not a must in our view, just make sure the weather conditions are good and enjoy.
