Kintamani viewpoint

Jalan Raya Penelokan, Batur Selatan, Bali

Description

Kintamani is a village (and a wider district as well) on the south-western edge of the larger caldera of Gunung Batur. There are actually two concentric calderas with the larger one being 10x13km and topping up at 2,151m (Gunung Abang), that is higher than Gunung Batur itself at 1,717m. Along the rim, there are many shops and restaurants from which travellers can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Batur and Mount Batur,

Access & Transport

The village is 30km / 1h northeast of Ubud and 70km / 2h30 from Kuta-Seminyak Lake Batur is 4km downhill by road.

Instructions & Recommendations

Bring a sweater or jacket as the rim is around 1,300m above sea level. It is a great place to stop on the way to and/or from a hike to the top of Mount Batur and some of the coffee shops are very comfy at a price that is slightly touristy but still excellent value considering the views.

Meta review

There are mixed reviews here: everybody loves the views and this altogether different side of Bali as compared to the beach resort areas but, over the last few years, a new "entrance fee" has sprung up taxing every tourist transiting through the area. It is unclear how official those are but, in our opinion, it is pushing the boundaries of monetizing natural features that should be free to view for all. Understandably, many people object to this, and this can significantly dampen the entire experience.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral: development of commercial ventures and fuel requires to get there but no carbon footprint from the visit itself. From a community standpoint, greed and questionable practices have taken over unfortunately.

Conclusion

We used to be massive supporters of the Batur area and in particular the views from the rim in Kintamani but whilst they are worth the IDR50k that villagers are trying to extract, the concept itself is extremely unpleasant and should not be supported in our view. One more to add to the increasing list of counterproductive developments for the Bali brand...
