Tirta Gangga - by Koreval
Description
Tirta Gangga was a royal water palace now turned tourist attraction in the north-eastern part of Bali. It was built in the mid-20th century by the last Raja of Karangasem and the complex comprises a holy spring, koi ponds, and bathing pools surrounded by statues of demons
Access & Transport
The attraction is located 6km north of Amlapura, just off the main road on the way towards Amed or Pura Lempuyang. There are parking spaces for visitors. From Ubud and South Bali, it is a 1.5-2.0h drive.
Instructions & Recommendations
It is possible to bathe in the upper pools for a fee. We recommend arriving early or late in the day to avoid the throngs of tourists taking pictures in portrait mode to post on social media.
Environmental & Social
Limited infrastructure and no real carbon footprint. Provides economic activity to the area but over-commercialized.
Conclusion
Tirta Gangga is pretty, very much so, but it neither warrants a significant detour, and certainly not the ever-increasing admission fees. Our advice is to only patronize the place is you have exhausted all other sights in the area or are out of ideas.
Key positive
Visually colourful and harmonious
Key negative
Small and often crowded
Expensive for what it is
Suitability
Stairs make it impractical for wheelchair users
